Federal Judge Rules in Favor of Law Firm in First Amendment Case Against Trump’s Executive Order

In a recent decision by U.S. District Judge Richard Leon, a significant First Amendment-related case has concluded with Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr emerging victorious. The ruling concerned an executive order viewed as a direct assault on the firm, which Judge Leon identified as an “egregious violation” of constitutional rights.

The executive order in question was suggested to target groups disfavored by former President Donald Trump, with Judge Leon emphasizing its punitive nature in the decision, stating, “The [executive order] shouts through a bullhorn: If you take on causes disfavored by President Trump, you will be punished!”

While the Judge’s decision granted a reprieve to Wilmer by permanently enjoining federal agencies from enforcing the order, it also partially sided with the Department of Justice, by dismissing some claims of the lawsuit filed by Wilmer.
