Albertsons Legal Chief’s Compensation Surges Amid Kroger Merger Fallout

Albertsons Cos. Inc.’s top legal officer, Thomas Moriarty, has seen a substantial increase in his compensation package following the fallout from the terminated merger with Kroger Co. According to Albertsons’ proxy statement, Moriarty’s total earnings for the fiscal year 2024, which ended February 22, rose to approximately $6.4 million, representing a 34% year-over-year increase from his $4.7 million earnings in the previous fiscal year.

The failed merger, which was officially terminated in December 2024, has had significant repercussions for Albertsons, placing considerable demands on its legal operations. Nevertheless, the company’s strategic response to these challenges, including the enhancement of its legal leadership compensation, reflects the importance it places on navigating complex corporate transitions.

Moriarty’s remuneration package for 2024 included a base salary of $900,000 along with $3.5 million in stock awards. This stock-based component was calculated on the closing price of Albertsons’ common stock as of April 2024. The recent boost in compensation underscores the critical role of legal leadership in corporate governance during periods of significant transition.
