Governor Healey Nominates Judge Joanna Rodriguez and Attorney Lisa Core to Massachusetts District Court

Governor Maura Healey has nominated Judge Joanna Rodriguez and attorney Lisa Core to serve as Associate Justices of the Massachusetts District Court. These nominations are now pending confirmation by the Governor’s Council.

Judge Rodriguez has been serving on the Juvenile Court bench since 2020. Prior to her appointment, she held the position of deputy general counsel at the Sex Offender Registry Board and managed a solo legal practice. Her extensive experience in juvenile justice and legal administration positions her well for the District Court role.

Lisa Core has been a sole practitioner for approximately a decade, focusing on both court-appointed and private criminal defense cases. Her background includes serving as an assistant district attorney in Essex County, where she supervised the Lynn District Court and Lynn Gun Court. Additionally, Core has experience as a law clerk for the Appeals Court, providing her with a comprehensive understanding of the judicial system.

The District Court in Massachusetts handles a diverse array of cases, including criminal, civil, housing, juvenile, and mental health matters. The addition of Judge Rodriguez and Lisa Core is anticipated to enhance the court’s capacity to manage its caseload effectively.

These nominations are part of Governor Healey’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the judiciary. In May 2025, she nominated Judge Asha White and attorney Amy Karangekis to the Superior Court, both of whom have demonstrated commitment to justice and the rule of law. Furthermore, in April 2025, Governor Healey addressed judicial vacancies in western Massachusetts by nominating District Court Judge Charles Groce III and attorney Jeffrey Trapani to the Superior Court. These nominations were in response to concerns from local lawmakers about delays in court proceedings due to unfilled positions.
