Dollar Tree Announces Leadership Transition Amid Ongoing Strategic Overhaul

Dollar Tree, Inc. has announced that Jonathan B. Leiken, its Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary, will depart the company after two years to pursue another career opportunity. Leiken will be succeeded by John S. Mitchell, Jr., who will assume the role on August 11, 2025. Leiken will remain with the company until August 22, 2025, to assist with the transition.

CEO Mike Creedon expressed gratitude for Leiken’s contributions during a pivotal period for the company, highlighting his deep expertise and sound judgment. Creedon also praised Mitchell, noting his sharp legal acumen and steady leadership, and emphasized that this promotion reflects the company’s commitment to career development within its ranks.

Mitchell joined Dollar Tree in 2021 as Senior Deputy General Counsel after serving as a partner at the law firm Williams Mullen. He holds a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University. His promotion comes as Dollar Tree continues to execute its strategic priorities following the recent sale of the Family Dollar business.

Leiken’s departure marks the latest in a series of leadership changes at Dollar Tree. In December 2024, Michael Creedon was appointed permanent CEO to lead the company’s turnaround efforts amid weak demand and intense competition. The company has also seen changes in its financial leadership, with Stewart Glendinning, formerly of Tyson Foods, appointed as Chief Financial Officer in March 2025.

These leadership transitions occur as Dollar Tree navigates a competitive retail landscape, facing challenges from larger retailers and online platforms offering significant discounts. The company has been implementing a turnaround strategy, including the closure of 970 Family Dollar stores and exploring options for the banner.

As Mitchell steps into his new role, Dollar Tree aims to continue its strategic initiatives and strengthen its position in the value retail sector.
