Norton Rose Fulbright and NMBL Technologies Locked in Legal Battle Over Alleged Fraud and Unfulfilled Promises

Norton Rose Fulbright is embroiled in a legal dispute with NMBL Technologies, a legal tech company founded by former partners Daniel Farris and Christopher Hines. NMBL has filed a $15 million fraud lawsuit against the firm in Illinois state court, alleging that Norton Rose made false promises to entice its founders to join its Chicago office and promote NMBL’s legal workflow product, Proxy, to clients. This countersuit follows Norton Rose’s earlier litigation against NMBL, accusing the company of deception and unauthorized retention of client files.

According to NMBL’s complaint, Norton Rose committed to supporting Proxy by integrating it into their client offerings and establishing a subsidiary focused on legal technology. However, NMBL contends that the firm failed to fulfill these promises, leading to significant financial losses. The company also alleges that Norton Rose’s subsidiary, LX Studio, was a “sham entity” that did not genuinely support legal tech initiatives.

In response, Norton Rose asserts that the lack of client interest in Proxy was the primary issue. The firm claims that a promotional email campaign offering a free trial of Proxy did not yield any client engagement. Additionally, Norton Rose alleges that NMBL withheld client data for weeks after their agreement expired at the end of the previous year.

Daniel Farris departed Norton Rose in May to join Foley & Lardner, where he now co-leads the firm’s data center and digital infrastructure team. Christopher Hines also left the firm and continues his practice in patent and technology law.

This legal battle underscores the complexities and potential pitfalls in collaborations between traditional law firms and legal technology startups. As the industry increasingly embraces technological solutions, the outcomes of such disputes may influence future partnerships and the integration of legal tech products into established legal practices.
