Spencer Fane Enhances Dallas IP Practice with Strategic Partner Hire

Spencer Fane LLP has expanded its intellectual property practice in Dallas by welcoming Brett M. Pinkus as a partner. Pinkus, who brings nearly two decades of experience, joins the firm from Texas-based Wick Phillips.

Pinkus specializes in patent, trademark, and trade secret litigation, representing clients in federal district courts nationwide, as well as in appeals to the Federal Circuit and post-grant proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. His practice also includes patent preparation and prosecution, patent opinions, portfolio development, acquisitions, and licensing and technology agreements. His client base spans industries such as mechanical, medical, electrical, and computer technologies.

Jason Cross, Office Managing Partner for Spencer Fane in Dallas, commented on the addition: “Brett’s blend of technical knowledge, creative legal acumen, and strong litigation skills will be a valuable addition to our innovative team of IP attorneys. We look forward to how he will help the firm continue to expand its portfolio of robust industry talent and specialized client service offerings in Texas.”

Pinkus holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and worked as an aeronautical engineer before earning his Juris Doctor from Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University. His engineering background informs his approach to intellectual property law, particularly in complex structural and systematic design cases.

This move is part of Spencer Fane’s broader strategy to enhance its intellectual property capabilities in Texas. In September 2023, the firm added Jeffrey Phillips as a partner in its Houston office. Phillips has extensive experience in patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, antitrust, and false advertising cases, representing clients across the country. He also has over 20 years of experience in patent prosecution and portfolio development. Prior to his legal career, Phillips held technical and project management positions in the oil and gas industry, providing him with a unique perspective on the intersection of technology and law.

Spencer Fane’s intellectual property practice offers a comprehensive range of services, including patent prosecution and defense, trademark registration and defense, licensing, and technology transactions. The firm serves clients across various industries, from health care and financial services to automotive and aerospace, aiming to protect and commercialize their intellectual property assets.
