The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is set to launch a new web-based platform next month aimed at enhancing the searchability of patent and trademark assignment records. This initiative is part of the agency’s broader efforts to modernize its systems and improve user experience.
Historically, the USPTO has maintained a comprehensive assignment database, recording patent assignment information from August 1980 to the present. This database is crucial for verifying the current ownership of patents or patent applications, facilitating due diligence, resolving patent rights disputes, and ensuring compliance with assignment recording protocols.
The forthcoming platform is expected to build upon these foundations by offering a more user-friendly interface and advanced search functionalities. Users will be able to search by multiple criteria, such as patent number, assignor and assignee names, publication numbers, and reel/frame numbers. The results will provide detailed information about each assignment, including participant names, assigned patents or applications, and the date of assignment.
This development aligns with the USPTO’s ongoing efforts to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations. In July 2025, the agency introduced DesignVision, an AI-powered image search tool for design patent examiners. DesignVision allows for centralized access and federated searching of design patents, registrations, trademarks, and industrial designs from over 80 global registers, returning search results based on image similarity.
Additionally, the USPTO has been developing AI capabilities within its Patents End-to-End (PE2E) search suite. These enhancements aim to streamline the examination process and reduce application pendency. The agency has also been working on a generative AI web application named “SCOUT” (Searching, Consolidating, Outlining, and Understanding Tool), which provides staff with access to advanced AI models to assist with various tasks, including code development and compliance efforts.
These initiatives reflect the USPTO’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of its services, benefiting both internal stakeholders and the broader intellectual property community.
