The search continues for 67-year-old Charles M. Hosch, co-founder of Dallas-based law firm Hosch & Morris PLLC and adjunct professor at Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law, who has been missing since November 11. Hosch was last seen hiking the Byron Herbert Reece Trail near Blood Mountain in Union County, Georgia.
Hosch, a Gainesville native, was visiting Georgia to address matters related to his late father’s estate. An experienced hiker and former Eagle Scout, he was familiar with the area. His daughter, Julia Hosch Singh, noted that her father had hiked Blood Mountain numerous times and possessed significant outdoor training relevant to the region.
The Union County Sheriff’s Office has mobilized a comprehensive search operation, deploying over 95 search and rescue personnel, multiple K-9 units, helicopters, and drone teams. Sheriff Shawn Dyer described the terrain as treacherous, rocky, and steep, emphasizing the methodical approach of the search teams. Authorities do not suspect foul play at this time.
A fellow hiker reported speaking with Hosch at the summit of Blood Mountain around 1:30 p.m. on November 11. This information has been instrumental in narrowing the search area. Hosch was last seen wearing khaki pants, a camel-colored sweater, and a dark green jacket.
The Union County Sheriff’s Office has urged anyone with information, particularly those who were near the Appalachian Trail or Mountain Crossing Store on November 11, to come forward. They are also seeking assistance from hunters with game cameras in the area, as their footage could provide critical information. Individuals with relevant information are encouraged to contact the Union County Emergency Operations Center at (706) 439-6091.
Hosch’s family and colleagues remain hopeful for his safe return. His law partner, Kate Morris, expressed the collective concern and determination to find him. The SMU Dedman School of Law community has also voiced deep concern for his safety and well-being.
As the search enters its second week, the community’s support and vigilance are crucial in the ongoing efforts to locate Charles M. Hosch.
