Cravath Sets 2025 Associate Bonuses as Legal Industry Compensation Stays Competitive

Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP has announced its 2025 year-end bonuses for associates, maintaining the firm’s position as a leader in legal compensation. The bonuses range from $15,000 for first-year associates to $115,000 for senior associates, with additional special bonuses between $6,000 and $25,000. These figures are consistent with last year’s payouts, reflecting the firm’s commitment to rewarding its associates’ contributions.

Following Cravath’s announcement, several other major law firms have matched these bonus structures. Paul Hastings, for instance, adopted the same bonus scale shortly after Cravath’s disclosure. This pattern underscores the competitive nature of associate compensation among top-tier law firms.

Earlier this year, Milbank LLP set a precedent by announcing special summer bonuses of up to $25,000 for associates and special counsel across its global offices. These bonuses, distributed by September 30, were based on seniority and ranged from $6,000 to $25,000. Milbank’s proactive approach in associate compensation has influenced subsequent bonus announcements by peer firms.

The legal industry has experienced a surge in client demand, particularly in transactional practices, contributing to the robust financial performance of many firms. This economic backdrop has enabled firms like Cravath and Milbank to offer competitive compensation packages to attract and retain top legal talent.

As the bonus season progresses, it is anticipated that more firms will align their compensation structures with those set by industry leaders, ensuring they remain competitive in the market for legal professionals.
