Democracy Forward, a progressive nonprofit organization known for its legal challenges against the Trump administration, has recently expanded its leadership team to bolster its capacity in addressing ongoing threats to democracy and the rule of law.
In July 2025, the organization welcomed several seasoned attorneys to its ranks. Joshua Salzman, who served as Assistant Director with the Civil Division’s Appellate Staff at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), joined as Senior Counsel. During his tenure at the DOJ, Salzman briefed hundreds of matters in federal appellate courts and argued over 40 cases across twelve circuits. His contributions were recognized with Attorney General awards in 2020 and 2024. Prior to his government service, he was part of WilmerHale’s Appellate and Supreme Court Litigation practice group.
Additionally, Anisha Hindocha was appointed as an Oversight Attorney. Hindocha previously held the position of Deputy Research Director at American Oversight, where she led investigations into significant events such as the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol and election audits in Arizona and New Mexico. Her background includes roles at Third Way and the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
Simon Brewer also joined as a Senior Staff Attorney. Before this role, Brewer was an attorney on the Appellate Staff of the DOJ’s Civil Division.
These appointments are part of Democracy Forward’s strategic effort to enhance its legal expertise and infrastructure. In August 2025, the organization launched an appellate practice to address cases progressing to federal appellate courts and the U.S. Supreme Court. This initiative aims to provide additional capacity to handle appeals from cases initiated by Democracy Forward and other aligned organizations.
President and CEO Skye Perryman emphasized the importance of this expansion, stating, “The courts remain a frontline in the work to ensure the American people’s rights are protected and that when the Trump-Vance administration abuses its power, it is held accountable.” She highlighted the organization’s commitment to being present in all courts to protect citizens’ rights.
These developments underscore Democracy Forward’s dedication to strengthening its legal capabilities in response to ongoing challenges to democratic principles and governance.
