Foley & Lardner Expands California Presence with Strategic Addition of Four Partners in Technology and Health Care Law

Foley & Lardner LLP has announced the addition of four partners to its California offices, enhancing the firm’s capabilities in corporate and intellectual property law. The new partners—Matt Browne, Darby Chan, Sanjeet “Sanj” Dutta, and Peter Stockburger—bring extensive experience in technology-related sectors, aligning with Foley’s strategic focus on innovative technology and health care.

Matt Browne joins the Transactions Practice Group in San Diego from Cooley LLP. He advises emerging growth, late-stage private, and public companies on corporate formation, governance, financings, mergers and acquisitions, SPAC transactions, securities matters, and public offerings. His industry experience spans software, cybersecurity, semiconductors, digital health, medical devices, biotechnology, financial services, and consumer products.

In San Francisco, Darby Chan becomes part of the Mechanical & Electromechanical Technologies Practice Group. Previously with Wilson Sonsini, Chan specializes in patent prosecution and counseling within the health care and life sciences sectors, particularly at the intersection of engineering and medicine. His expertise includes building patent portfolios, developing global filing strategies, conducting freedom-to-operate analyses, and supporting IP diligence for financings and acquisitions. He has advised on technologies such as biomedical imaging, robotic surgery, neurotechnology, diagnostics, digital health, therapeutic devices, drug-device combinations, research tools, and biomedical instrumentation.

Sanjeet “Sanj” Dutta joins the Electronics Practice Group in Silicon Valley from Goodwin. He brings deep experience guiding technology-focused companies on patent strategy, portfolio development, and IP matters involving artificial intelligence, semiconductors, robotics, and advanced computing. Dutta represents clients in patent litigation and trade secret disputes across federal courts, ITC proceedings, and PTAB matters, including inter partes and ex parte reexaminations. He also advises on IP aspects of venture financings and strategic acquisitions.

Peter Stockburger, formerly managing partner of Dentons’ San Diego office, joins the Technology Transactions, Cybersecurity, and Privacy Practice Group in San Diego. He advises global companies on legal and regulatory issues involving artificial intelligence, data privacy, cybersecurity, autonomous systems, and emerging technologies. His practice includes developing AI governance frameworks, negotiating complex technology agreements, building privacy and security programs, conducting risk assessments, and guiding clients through regulatory inquiries, litigation, and cyber incidents.

These additions are part of Foley & Lardner’s ongoing expansion in California.
