Samsung and Pictiva Resolve OLED Patent Disputes Amid Legal Complexities and Market Pressures

Samsung Electronics Co. has reached a settlement with Pictiva Displays International Ltd., resolving two patent disputes concerning OLED technology. The companies jointly notified the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas on October 8, 2026, requesting dismissal of both cases. The specific terms of the settlement have not been disclosed.

The litigation centered on U.S. Patent Nos. 11,828,425 and 8,314,547, which pertain to OLED display technologies. In November 2025, a jury found that Samsung had willfully infringed these patents by incorporating OLED displays into several of its products, awarding Pictiva $191.4 million in damages. The jury also determined that Samsung failed to prove the patents’ invalidity.

Following the verdict, Pictiva and its trust beneficiary, Key Patent Innovations Ltd., initiated a second lawsuit in May 2026, alleging further infringement of the ‘547 patent by additional Samsung televisions and monitors. This subsequent case was also resolved as part of the recent settlement.

Notably, the patents at the heart of this dispute originated from OSRAM’s OLED lighting division and were acquired by Pictiva in August 2020. The U.S. Patent Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) later canceled a single claim, casting doubt on nearly half of the awarded damages. This development likely influenced the parties’ decision to settle.

This settlement underscores the complexities of patent litigation in the rapidly evolving OLED sector, where companies must navigate the fine line between innovation and intellectual property rights.
