Israel Declares War on Hamas After Suffering Largest Single-Day Death Toll

In light of recent events, an unprecedented attack by Hamas on Israel has sparked significant concern. According to an eaerly Sunday morning report by JURIST, Israel has confirmed over 600 deaths and more than 2,000 injuries, an estimated 100+ kidnapped, and hundreds still missing following Saturday’s unexpected offensive by Hamas.

Hamas launched over 4,000 rockets into Israel, a surprise attack that mirrored the outset of the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Notably, the attack occurred exactly fifty years to the day of the start of the aforementioned war, and on Simchat Torah — an influential holiday for the Jewish community worldwide.

Hamas militants infiltrated the borders of Israel, sovereignly occupying 22 neighbourhoods, seizing police stations and committing a plethora of atrocities. From the killing of the elderly at public bus stations, intruding homes, to the kidnapping of children and women, the violations of human rights have been grave, causing international distress.

The severity of this assault is being likened to the 9/11 attacks in the US given its high, single-day death toll—a first in Israel’s history. Such grave statistics have not been recorded in Jewish history since the Holocaust. Further, local infrastructure, including hospitals, has come under assault, hampering response and aid to the wounded.

In response to these attacks, Israel has mobilised its military forces, with operations against Hamas initiated through the night. Furthermore, preparation was made for potential attack by Hezbollah at the northern border, successfully neutralising the bombed sites swiftly.

Whilst global leaders have backed Israel against these human rights violations, Hamas has witnessed support from Iranian and Qatari leadership, with rallies held across various western countries.

In the wake of these events, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has officially declared war against Hamas invoking Section 40 of the Basic Law. Concurrently, calls for the formation of an emergency unity government are being made by opposition leader Yair Lapid following months of anti-government protests, to better address the ongoing crisis.

As events unfold and the crisis intensifies, the casualties and impact are expected to rise, holding global attention and concern.
