As advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have continued to create revolutionary waves across sectors, the legal tech space has remained no stranger to these developments. Aptly reflecting this trend, LexisNexis launched Lexis+ AI in October 2023 which, according to Jake Nelson, Senior Product Manager at LexisNexis, is slated to reshape the way legal work is executed. This AI tool addresses key areas such as legal research and drafting, whilst also providing users with the ability to summarise case documents or even ask questions in a conversational manner.
What really sets Lexis+ AI apart is its integration with machine learning and birth as one of the first generative AI-based legal tech tools capable of citing and Shepardizing its sources. Powering it all is a selection of large language models (LLMs), including OpenAI’s GPT-4, which the tool autonomously chooses based on the task at hand.
However, the true power of these LLMs lies in the sheer quality and quantity of data used to train them. As Nelson aptly noted, LexisNexis with its extensive history and reputation in the legal field has “unparalleled access” to legal data, allowing it to create a truly distinguished and exhaustive content collection in the market. It’s a fact underscored by firsthand experience, with Nelson’s early legal tech startup struggling due to the lack of access to essential training data.
Nelson emphasizes the company’s adoption of novel technology is always complemented by maintaining stringent levels of security and privacy—essential to legal professionals. Notably, the company uses established and familiar technology to lay a robust foundation before introducing newer systems.
Considering the future of Lexis+ AI, Nelson foresees ample potential to enhance the tool’s capabilities further. Utilizing the building block approach, they continue to strengthen the product’s fundamental capabilities before aspiring for more advanced enhancements. Moreover, in a bid to familiarize future legal professionals with AI’s function and ethics, LexisNexis provides free access to Lexis+ AI to students at ABA-accredited law schools, instilling the responsibility of understanding and using AI in a new generation of lawyers.
