Thousands Rally in Support of Spain’s Prime Minister Amid Wife’s Corruption Allegations

Thousands of people marched in Madrid on Friday showing support for the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez. The public demonstration followed the publication of Sánchez’s letter on Twitter, where he stated his need for ‘time to reflect.’ This statement arrives in the wake of a preliminary investigation in Madrid court against his wife on alleged corruption charges.

The case was initiated by a group named ‘Manos Limpias‘ (Clean Hands), triggered by several articles on digital media alleging irregularities attributable to Begoña Gomez. Sanchez labelled Manos Limpias as a ‘far-right organization’ in his letter, characterizing the case against his wife as an ‘operation of harassment and demolition by land, sea and air.’ This, he suggests, is an attempt to weaken him both personally and politically by scrutinizing his wife, Begoña.

In the group’s press release, Manos Limpias’ General Secretary, Bernard Remon, decries the behavior of the Spanish Prime Minister as ‘totally unacceptable.’ He dismisses the claim that Manos Limpias is a ‘far-right organization.’ Remon insists that the truth of the digital media allegations and the fate of the case rest with the court.

Political commentators and analysts have interpreted Sanchez’s letter as a maneuver designed to rally political support. Critics, however, argue it was merely an effort to steer attention away from the charges levelled against his wife.
