Bernadette Meyler, JD ’03, Carl and Sheila Spaeth Professor of Law at Stanford, recently chaired Stanford University’s Ad Hoc Committee on University Speech, formed by the Faculty Senate in February 2023.
The committee was tasked with articulating clear principles for protecting speech throughout university processes, establishing mechanisms for ensuring that protection, and providing training for students, staff, and faculty on those principles. Meyler emphasized the goal of establishing new rules around university speech to promote the values of free expression within the community.
The Faculty Senate adopted the committee’s proposals at the end of the Spring quarter. Meyler also holds the role of associate dean for research and intellectual life at Stanford.
