In June 2024, the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI) awarded its Prize for the Best Paper in the ECGI Law Working Paper Series to Curtis J. Milhaupt, William F. Baxter-Visa International Professor of Law at Stanford Law School. Milhaupt’s paper, “The (Geo)Politics of Controlling Shareholders,” delves into the intricate relationship between controlling shareholders and geopolitical influences. The ECGI commended the paper for its significant and innovative contribution to corporate governance scholarship by exploring how the characteristics of firms with controlling shareholders amplify their geopolitical relevance. Additionally, the paper advocates for broadening corporate governance studies beyond economic theories to include geopolitical and political-economic perspectives.
Further cementing his eminence in the field, Milhaupt was appointed as a Fellow of the ECGI in January 2024. The ECGI is an international non-profit organization that serves as a forum for discussions among academics, legislators, and practitioners on critical corporate governance issues and best practices. The Fellowship is awarded to members who have demonstrated exceptional scientific excellence or notable achievements in corporate governance and stewardship. More details about the awards and Milhaupt’s contributions can be found on the Stanford Law School website.
